Andalucía has long been a favourite holiday destination for the British. It has one of the best climates in the world, with over three hundred days of sunshine a year. It has a beautiful coastline and a superb hinterland with wonderful mountains. This combination is particularly attractive to those looking for an active holiday - skiing, sailing, windsurfing, riding, walking and mountain biking are all very popular.

Mountain bikes are a particularly good way of exploring the diverse terrain, particularly if you book with a specialised biking holiday operator, such as Sierra Cycling who are the only biking organisation to be based directly on the beach. They will know the best routes and will be able to match routes to expertise. Most trails are suitable for those who are intermediate level. Each day will be different - one day you could be twisting and turning through forest paths, the next following a ridge line with wide open panoramic views. Many of the rides will start high and end up on the beach, allowing nature to help you with the cycling as much as possible.

Whilst those of an intermediate level will probably gain most from a cycling holiday, there are flat trails which are aimed at beginners and some involving hair raising descents which are aimed at experts. Families should not be put off. There are trailers available for those with very young children. For those with slightly older children (6-14), there are specialised trails available and you can be sure that cycling is a good way to ensure that they use up their energy.

Although cycling is the ideal way to explore the countryside and experience some of the great local cuisine, it is not the only thing to do. The beach obviously comes with its own set of activities from sunbathing, building sandcastles and swimming to sailing and windsurfing. There are also several aqua parks in Andalucía which make a great family day out or you can visit some of the pretty local towns and villages.

If you are on an active holiday and have any energy left at the end of the day, Andalucía has a vibrant and varied night life. Bars and restaurants abound and are open late into the night - reflecting the Spanish custom of eating late. There are several clubs for those who like to dance or try out the beach at night.

Andalucía has good transport links with the UK - with regular scheduled flights to Malaga. From here it is only a short transfer to wonderful beach resorts with the beautiful mountains behind. Bikes are a great way of ensuring that you explore all that is on offer. They provide a healthy and invigorating holiday, which is suitable for the entire family.
